Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It typically occurs when the macula, which is responsible for central vision, deteriorates over time. This can lead to blurry or distorted vision, difficulty seeing colors, and blind spots in your field of vision. People with this condition may struggle with reading, driving, and even recognizing faces. While there is no cure for macular degeneration, early detection and management are key to preserving as much vision as possible.

At iFocus Vision Center, our eye doctor, Dr. Velasco, will look for signs of AMD during your comprehensive eye exam and determine the severity of any damage. Using advanced diagnostic technology, she can often detect this disease before you have any noticeable symptoms.

Types of AMD

There are two main types of AMD: wet AMD and dry AMD. Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid, causing rapid vision loss. On the other hand, dry AMD happens when cells in the macula break down over time, leading to a slow decline in central vision.

Treatment for age-related macular degeneration

For patients with dry AMD, Dr. Velasco focuses on managing the symptoms and slowing down the progression of the disease. While there is currently no treatment for dry AMD, certain lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet high in antioxidants and taking supplements like vitamins A, C, E, zinc, and copper can help support overall eye health. Regular eye exams at iFocus Vision Center are crucial for monitoring any changes in your vision and adjusting your treatment plan as needed.

When treating wet AMD, early detection is key. Our state-of-the-art technology allows Dr. Velasco to closely monitor changes in your macula and detect any signs of abnormal blood vessel growth. If caught early enough, treatments such as anti-VEGF injections or laser therapy can help slow down the progression of wet AMD and preserve your vision.
