Who is at risk for glaucoma?
Anyone can develop glaucoma, but risk increases with age, a family history of glaucoma, high eye pressure, diabetes, severe nearsightedness, previous eye injuries, or long-term steroid use. Because glaucoma often develops without noticeable symptoms, regular comprehensive eye exams are important for early detection.
Can glaucoma be cured?
Glaucoma cannot currently be cured, and vision that has already been lost cannot be restored. However, early diagnosis and ongoing treatment can often slow or prevent further vision loss. Dr. Velasco will monitor your eye health and adjust your treatment plan as needed to help protect your remaining vision.
How often do I need follow-up visits for glaucoma?
Follow-up schedules depend on your type of glaucoma, eye pressure, treatment plan, and whether the condition is stable or progressing. Do glaucoma eye drops have side effects?
Some glaucoma eye drops can cause temporary burning, redness, dry eye symptoms, blurry vision, changes in eyelash growth, or darkening of the skin around the eyes.
