Myopia Management
in Las Vegas
At iFocus Vision Center, we offer myopia management in Las Vegas to slow the rate at which a prescription increases year after year. This matters most for children, since their eyes are still developing and have the most to gain from early intervention.
High levels of myopia are linked to a greater risk of serious eye conditions later in life, including glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment. Our experienced eye doctor, Dr. Vivienne Velasco, offers a range of myopia management methods and works with families to find the option that best fits their child’s eyes and lifestyle.
What is myopia?
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a common vision problem that causes distant objects to appear blurry while close objects can be seen clearly. This condition occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
Myopia is becoming more common worldwide. Researchers estimate that nearly half the global population will be nearsighted by 2050.¹
Myopia control options at iFocus Vision Center
We offer several proven treatments to help slow myopia progression, including contact lenses for myopia control, prescription eye drops, and eyeglasses. Every child is different, so we’ll recommend the option that best fits your child’s age, eye health, vision needs, and daily routine. Here’s a closer look at the treatments we offer.
MiSight® 1 day contact lenses
These daily disposable soft contact lenses are specifically designed for myopia management in children and teenagers. They are the first and only soft contact lenses FDA–approved to slow myopia progression in children ages 8-12 at the start of treatment. Kids in this age group wearing MiSight® 1 day lenses saw a 59% decrease in myopia progression over three years.
Anti-fatigue lenses
Anti-fatigue or digital relaxing lenses are lenses designed to reduce eye strain caused by prolonged screen time. Dr. Velasco may recommend these lenses for patients who spend a lot of time on electronic devices, such as computers or smartphones. By reducing the stress on our eyes, these lenses can help slow down the progression of myopia.
Low-dose atropine eye drops
Atropine is a medication that can help relax the focusing muscles in our eyes, which can slow down the growth of our eyeballs and reduce myopia progression. Dr. Velasco may prescribe low-dose atropine eye drops for patients who are at risk of developing high levels of myopia.
Multifocal soft contact lenses
These innovative contact lenses provide clear vision at various distances while also slowing down the progression of myopia. By encouraging your eyes to focus properly, these lenses can help prevent your prescription from increasing each year.
Orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses
These rigid gas permeable contact lenses are worn overnight to reshape the cornea temporarily and correct vision during the day without needing glasses or daytime contacts. Ortho-k lenses not only provide clear vision but also slow down the elongation of the eyeball which leads to progressive nearsightedness.
Stellest® lenses
Essilor Stellest lenses are FDA-authorized spectacle lenses proven to slow myopia progression in children, reducing it by an average of 71% over two years.² Your eye doctor will fit your child’s lenses to suit their prescription and everyday activities.
Stellest lenses are typically recommended for children ages 6–12 with myopia, with or without astigmatism. Your child may be a good candidate if they:
- Were recently diagnosed with myopia
- Have a prescription that’s been steadily increasing
- Are too young, or not ready, for contact lenses
